birthday & other bits

as some of you may know, my birthday was last week. i think i told wes my birthday list soon after christmas & then promptly forgot what it was that i requested. of course. (meaning, we both forgot what i requested). but! it was a super great day! i took the girls to the chocolatier in uptown westerville (one of my favorite places. ever.) where we ate dessert first (a few bon bons, a hefty serving of white chocolate & raspberry gelato), made our way to the shadiest park in the area (alum creek park!), then home for a late lunch. then i sat on the couch for about 2-3 hours (yes!) reading (special topics in calamity physics) which i struggled to start but really enjoyed--which is being made into a movie?! but also, something else about this book...i assumed all the books the author/main character referenced were real & tried to look it up to check out at the library...i was in a frenzy, why doesn't our library have this? maybe i should buy it off of amazon. maybe it's here or there or with a mouse in a house. but no, it is a fictional book (this certain one i was trying to find, twin paradox & atomic clocks...in case you're wondering, not real. bummer). anyway.

so then wes made a red velvet cake for me!! (this is the type of cake my grandma made for nearly all birthdays or family events. i haven't had it in years. wes even found my grandma's recipe & used it! *sigh*, love.) & my sister, brother in law, & cutey-cute-cute evie were there to sing to me.

addy decided to give her hair a trim.
she actually did a fairly decent job, eh? her reasoning is this: "because THAT piece of hair KE-EPT being in my FACE! ugh. so i cut it" *big guilty smile* back to me. a day later wes grabbed a pair of scissors out of amelia's hands as she was aiming for a very large hunk of her own hair, simply modeling her sister's actions.

what else...

here's the pictures of our new floors!

the pictures are a bit dark--we finished late--& with furniture on it, well, it just looks fantastic. a friend visited a few days ago & said our first floor (he didn't go upstairs) looked very european. i tried to be very modest about it all, but...i know, i know. we are just so very cool & euro. (that was sarcasm, btw). i'm not totally comfortable with the way the dining room is decorated & set up right now, but it is what it is for now. it may take a few months for me to get my white room bearings.

this summer we are having picnics about every other week with my sister & her cutie-patootie, evie. see, isn't she freakin adorable?! & the loved the swing...she would giggle & do some belly laughs & kick her feet around. the girls look forward to these picnics like it was christmas.

my kids have no concept of weather. true, this certain day wasn't like the recent super hot & humid days, just in the 80's...but really, this is just a glimpse of how they dress themselves: in winter garb. who knows.

my mom emailed us a few super old emails & pictures from eons ago, when addy was a newborn. so addy has been looking at these pictures of herself with a perfect-O-mouth, in awe..."this was me?! i was such a cute baby!" lol, do we need to work on humility? but really, i just can't believe how fast it has gone by. true, wes & i were in a sleep deprived daze after adeline was born for a bit over 9 months, so...that time went by super duper fast. or slow, depending on how you look at it, i guess.

here's addy just a week old. THOSE CHEEKS!

amelia loves watermelon. she will tell people this as she meets them for the first time, (with gusto) "i like watermelon. AND AND AND BLACK BEANS & WATERMELON!" then she will put her hands on her hips, stick one hip out to the side, & plop her foot in front of her, nodding her head, eyes big. (very seriously) "yea, yea, watermelon & black beans."

one morning last week this was the first thing she said to me, sleepily: "i want watermelon today. can we get watermelon pweeeze?" but she will sit & eat sometimes up to 1/4 of a large melon at a time. she's oh, about 28 pounds, tall, sorta lanky, yet muscular...but when she eats her watermelon her belly protrudes at a freakish level.

yesterday as amelia sat eating her watermelon, addy was keenly watching her sister. here's the heartbreaker conversation.

adeline: amelia why do you like watermelon so much?
amelia: because i do.
adeline: but why, amelia? why do you like watermelon so so much?
amelia: because i love my mommy.

i don't think anything can top that, so i'll end this post there.
