so we're going on this cruise, have i mentioned that yet? probably not because it's sort of against internet rules or something, right?, to share when you are vacationing. well, i'm not going to say when just that EVERYONE IS EXCITED! especially the girls. this is a trip to celebrate my in-laws 40th wedding anniversary. holy crap, right? 40 years! so we'll be a-caribbean-it-up.
that last part is from a&a's speech. it's sort of their "like"...they say it to anything: we're going to a-dance-it-up, right mommy? we're going to bike-it-up! they were a-laughing-it-up. etc etc etc. no worries, they also say like, like all the time. like, i can't believe like starts this early.
anyway, i've started packing the past week, just sort of filling up the suitcases with the random clothes. so monday, i decided i should look for my bathing suits...i found the yellow 2 piece tankini. then i only found the bottoms for my nicer lands end (which stands for an endless search taking you all over the land of online shopping, returning, more on line shopping, returning, etc...lands end, get it?!). then i start looking everywhere for the top. in the basement...in the girls' closets & dressers & summer bins...in my dresser a million times. i called wes to see if he had any clue where my bathing suit was (of course he didn't).
so i got this ladder out. it's actually a chair that turns into a ladder...you would take the top of the chair, flip it over & VOILA!!: a ladder! wes made it with his great uncle barney (who made the shelves we have & a few other furniture pieces...what a hobby, eh?). amelia was home with me, addy at school... (do you sense the foreshadowing of doom?).
we have this tall shelf in our closet, tall enough that only wes can naturally reach it with his super stretch arms. so i need a ladder. but really i should never be on a ladder because my balance is just plain horrible. but damnitall i needed to find my bathing suit! so i turn this chair into a ladder, haul it over to the closet & start searching. i looked through my basket of purses (who knows?!). then i moved some random items over to the left & as i was reaching to the right for this bin...something went awry.
the world went sideways & i crashed to the floor. i fell into the shoe rack with my butt & hip. i hit my head hard on the floor. amelia just stood there, her mouth gaping open. i just laid there, stunned, letting the world come into focus...wait, my glasses fell off my head, so nothing was in focus. *smile* later i realized that the fall had also ripped through 2 pairs of leggings & my undies (why was i wearing two pairs of leggings? well, i was trying out this light sweater i bought at target for the cruise. i wanted to see how warm or cool it was...so i put it on, didn't want to wear jeans, so then i put a pair of leggings on...discovered i was super cold, so then i put another pair of leggings on, naturally. so there you have it...).
then i started to cry. yep, i did. because when i tried to get up, sharp pains went through my head & hip & i was all "i've fallen & i can't get up!" when i put my hand to my butt, it returned with blood all over it... amelia said things like "lots of blood, mommy! oh no, mommy you are bleeding...you need bandaids!" & i didn't even know where my cell phone is, as usual. so in between cries & sobs of pain, i asked amelia to run & find my phone. she came back a few minutes later, panting "i can't find it!" so then i asked her to grab the home phone. she found it! i was saved!
so, who should i call?! it was about 10 minutes before we had to pick up adeline from school. i called my back yard neighbor. the phone didn't connect, just that annoying "this line is not connected" or something like that. so i called wes a few times, hoping it would go through; it didn't. then i realized that i had to get up or else amelia was looking like she would call 911 somehow. & that was not going to happen to me, right?
i sent amelia into another room. she didn't need to see me cry & struggle to get up. this is so dramatic, right?! so she left & i turned over, head spinning, hip hurting. & wobbled my way out of the closet only to hear amelia crying. she was in her bed, circled up with her bunny, crying. *heart break*
i limped down the stairs, put a clean washcloth on my butt cut, under my torn leggings & slowly made my way to the car, with amelia's help. as i was getting my coat on, she put her little hand on my legs & said: "mommy, you know jesus didn't want this to happen to you. jesus loves us & wants good things to happen, not things that hurt."
whhaaaa?! of course, i started to cry again because this was kinda intense stuff coming from my 4 year old at the perfect time, right? i asked her where she learned this: at preschool! huh.
so we got to school just as all the other kids were getting into their cars with their non-limping parents. i spotted a friend, justina. she asked if i was okay...i'm not sure what gave it away, my limp or me brushing tears away or just that i had that "what the hell just happened look". who knows. i told her that i fell off a ladder & maybe, just maybe could you stop by my house to see if i need stitches on my butt?
this, folks, is what neighborly friends are for. to help in the time of butt problems that i am unable to see in the mirror...so she agreed & i walked into school. wait, i didn't walk. i limped, holding onto my hip. like someone who appeared half drunk or something. who knows what they thought but thankfully, the office ladies recognized me in their cameras & i didn't have to approach the desk in person, so addy came running out to meet me in the hallway. she was like "what's wrong with you?!" i told her i fell off the ladder & hurt my bottom & she laughed. *sigh* i know, it is funny, right?
my neighborly friend let me know i didn't need stitches, thank sweet jesus for that one. then i discovered that our phone lines & internet were down, which is why the home line didn't work. of course, in my time of need! the only reason we have that stupid home phone...& it doesn't work when we need it.
every time i tell this to someone it, especially my sister, it gets a bit more funny & a bit less painful. i think it would make a great lucille ball episode! now, 5 days later, i just have this deep bruise on my buttocks with a 2 inch scab, both that hurt every time i sit. ah well.
all's well that ends well, as ma would say...
...which leads me to tell you that i'm sort of investigating the life of laura ingalls wilder. it something i've always been interested in & now that we have been reading the series to addy at night for the past 6 months or so, i thought it a great time. i've requested all the extra books & random publishing (a little house sampler, some of rose's published essays or whatever on her childhood & such...(sitting on the couch nursing my aching butt) i mean, the real story of the ingalls pioneer days, then after almanzo & laura were married & how rose wilder lane despised farming & her childhood. it's all so interesting. i just finished "the wilder life" by wendy mcclure...she went a bit far, going to all their homestead sites. maybe we'll do that as a family at some point ??
a few weeks ago wes & addy went to a father-daughter dance at her school. the theme was 'sock hop' but adeline was not about to dress up & she wanted daddy to wear a tie, "like barak obama! he's so handsome" per adeline's current & long lasting crush on the president.
we convinced her that wes could wear a tie AND look a bit sock-hoppish & also that she could wear a puffy slip & cardigan to also look a bit sock-hoppish. & wes even had a corsage for her! sweetness, eh?
they only lasted an hour, but i think it was the best night of her life in a long, long time. ... because the next day, as we all went to shop with her grandma sue at easton, adeline vomited all over the sidewalk in front of the anthroplogie store.
and, can you find amelia?
