& to think it started out so well...

...the 'it' in the title being our date night, or this morning. either one has been--if i'm choosing to be optimistic--character building times. let me share!

saturday night

for the first time in 4 months we had our first date night out on a weekend night. a friend of mine had offered to babysit at no charge (except hugs of gratitude from me). everything was working out okay, minus this terrible migraine i had earlier in the day. BUT! my old migraine meds worked, the migraine went away & our plans were still on. i mean, my hair looked good! i found a cute outfit that wouldn't make me too hot or cold, would work if we decided to walk around the short north or if we went to a movie after dinner.

we chose this place b/c they offer great gluten free stuff, plus it tastes amazing. we found a parking place right in front of the restaurant! we were seated within 3 or 4 minutes (the last table available!), we ordered without a problem (it shows gf options right on the regular menu...the server knew *exactly* what i was talking about, it was bliss). i started to feel a bit queasy but just thought i was hungry. our appetizer came & once i smelled it, my stomach turned...when i took a bite, it was like stones hitting my gut. within, oh, 3 minutes i had to run out to the car to lie down...wes got our food to go & started to drive home...at which point i grabbed the canvas toy basket from the backseat & vomited. gross.

we pulled over, wes dumped out the canvas basket onto the curb (that was now leaking stomach fluid, EWWWW). some unsuspecting home owner in the italian village/short north is going to be sitting on their beautiful front porch & smell/see/step in! this awful puddle of my stomach contents...with a few barrettes & bouncy balls mixed in as well. on the way home i managed to keep all stomach contents down until a mile away from our house (then i also managed to keep all the vomit into this tiny glad-wear plastic thing wes found under the seat).

that night i spewed 8-10 times within two hours. it was miserable...i have *never* experienced anything like that before. the final vomit was my medicine. if you have never up-chucked dissolved & regurgitated medicine before, well lucky you; it tasted so terrible! so saturday night i didn't have any of my medications in me: the meds that stop me from having daily headaches, the meds that stopped my migraine, the meds that decrease my muscle soreness, the vitamins that help with muscle/skeletal soreness, & finally my sleeping pills. so i was up until 2:30, hungry, thirsty, exhausted, sore, & miserable.

now, aren't you glad you read this blog?!

this morning

adeline got to school without a hitch. amelia was happy & slept in until 8:15. we refinanced & signed the paperwork this morning, saving us $120 a month & the notary was able to come to our house to do this. amelia sat in her high chair the entire time, happily munching on breakfast. amelia & i played with puzzles & read books &--gasp!--cleaned a bit.  i was able to vacuum most of the downstairs, then mop the tile. griswold lazily stayed outside the entire time, allowing the the tile to actually stay clean! i picked up adeline, talked with her teacher about the walking pneumonia & she said how well adeline seems today. good morning, right?

i let adeline & amelia play outside after we get home. i specifically tell adeline that she can only play outside if she stays away from our neighbor's sidewalk, to not go through the yellow-staked-off-tape area b/c of the very fresh concrete poured this morning (at 7:15 a.m...yes! the concrete truck didn't even wake up amelia!). adeline was very serious & said 'i understand, mommy, stay off that sidewalk!' so i RAN inside with amelia on my hip to change from slipper-boots to real boots so i could run after the girls in the muddy lawn.

i come outside to find adeline in the middle of the WET concrete *with her tricycle*, JUMPING. (what the hell.) this started the series of unfortunate events.
*neighbor's concrete with tricycle & addy's footprints embedded down about 1 inch.
*adeline's new shoes covered in concrete.
*adeline's new tights with spots of concrete.
*adeline sobbing in her bedroom b/c mommy is a screaming maniac (well deserved per adeline...did she really expect me not to be upset?!)
*cleaning off drying concrete from new shoes, tights, rug, floor
*tracking down our out-of-town neighbor's phone numbers, calling & sheepishly telling them about the concrete incident & asking very sheepishly who i need to call to get this taken care of.
*while waiting for concrete workers to arrive, making lunches & trying to calm adeline down (who was still sobbing in her bedroom)
*amelia throwing her plate smeared with ketchup against the cupboards, splattering ketchup & mashed raspberries everywhere in the kitchen.
*adeline walking outside without pants on telling me she pooped in her pull up
*while cleaning addy's poopy pull up, amelia decided to dump her yogurt container secretly in her bib, so when i finally get around to taking her out of the high chair (took much longer than usual, which explains her desire to throw her plate of ketchup), the secret clump of yogurt lands on my shoes & floor (which i had just cleaned again after finding the ketchup)
*go out & talk with concrete workers, who totally ignore me except for their smiles. seriously, the didn't even acknowledge i was standing there asking them questions! (who do i talk with to pay for this fix? should i just leave my information with one of you? i'm sorry you had to come back to re-do this...). it was like i was doing a monologue on a stage or something. finally, one guy looked up & said 'we ain't going to say anything to anyone about this' then he continued working. ??? i have no clue what direction to take that comment. very nice, but does that mean no one has to pay for this fix? not a big deal? or that they'll secretly charge our neighbors, which is so not okay with me (or them!)...
*so while i am out there doing my monologue to the wet concrete, amelia is filling her boots with squished raspberries, grapes, & pieces of chewed up & spit out chicken nuggets. then she's trying to put them on when i walk back in but them promptly dumps them onto the carpet when she sees me walk in
*while i'm cleaning up the boot-dump mess, amelia makes her way onto the table & starts to tear apart all the napkins, licking them, which makes her wipe her mouth & nose which gets snot & slobber into the mix of tiny particles of napkins which she them throws off the table.

so now, i have given up any sort of parenting. for the past 30 minutes the girls have been locked upstairs via a gate & i am downstairs. after a few minutes of yelling down: mommy! come up here! mommy, baby doing this or that or whatever they now get the picture, that i'm on a fake vacation. that just maybe i am looking up child-boot camps or maybe even job applications--they don't even have to be in my area of expertise! target, mcdonald's, etc...really, any type of job that would take me permanently *away* from this house! yes, unrealistic. but a day that makes me want to run away from the reality of kids. i have come to expect that kids will be totally messy & have very poor abilities to stop themselves from doing fun & destructive & even blatantly disobedient things. i just can't handle it when it happens all within an hour of each other...it's as if just ONE thing has to go wrong & that sets off the next few hours filled with me playing catch-up to their range of destruction.

by now amelia should be in her crib, sleeping but i can't bring myself to walk up the stairs only to find what i'm certain in another floor of disasters. yea, "to think, it started out so well"

optimistically, the weather is going to be beautiful this week, nearing 80 degrees by the weekend! sunny & warm. i'm hoping to see peeks of blooms on flowers this week. & my vomiting night seemed to be just from my medicine & migraine combo, not food poisoning or a virus...so i'm feeling much better. & i get to start planning our easter day which will be complete with adeline & amelia's best friends, their twin cousins here to play with...we're hoping to do an easter egg hunt & maybe a scavenger hunt for their baskets. it will be a fun weekend, so we need to get over this crappy day & rid my thoughts of vomiting near crap-like substances!

next week is addy's spring break so i'm trying to think of some fun whole-day activities to do with both girls. ideas? really, i need to get my booty upstairs & face the music, the totally wrecked house music. & eat something for lunch...are these the days i will look back on & laugh or will block out of my memory?

  1. Oh lord. I'm sorry about the date night fiasco, and the rest of it for that matter, but I have to laugh. One -- we all have days like this. I think we'll block them from memory. And two -- the guys telling you they ain't saying nothing about the concrete? Ha! It's like they were witnesses to a murder or something. Too funny.

  2. Getting sick on date night...not so funny. Your day today...not so funny. Well then why did I laugh my butt off reading about it? Probably because no one can possibly understand the minds and lives of a mom with two wee ones. Hang in there, because if your life is like mine, I am certain this will not be the last crazy day:)

  3. I am still chewing over "child-boot-camp"..... hilarious. You haven't truly lived until you have to humbly approach your neighbor about expensive damages done by your offspring.
