no call names

a few weeks ago adeline called me a bad name. i don't remember exactly what the name was, something along the lines of silly pizza (or maybe it was stinky pizza? i know pizza was in the two-word bad name, though). she didn't say it out of anger, more of a way to joke around. it hit me that i needed to start talking with her about calling people names & how that can make people feel sad even when you don't mean for it to make them sad. really, being called any type of pizza didn't hurt my feelings but it may hurt a kid's feelings? who knows. what i do know is that it was time to have this conversation, the name-calling is mostly mean conversation.

she took it well & stopped calling names. instead, she would say jokes like 'mommy silly' using names that are not hurtful & even a bit funny. the other night after bathtime she said she didn't want daddy to put her to bed b/c daddy makes the bed stinky which lead to stinky daddy, stinky daddy, etc. i reminded her about name calling (even when well deserved *smile*) & then asked her what funny names mommy & daddy call her. she replied: ADELINE! what?! i tried to explain that adeline *is* her name & addy is the nickname but that totally went over her head. by this time she was laughing hysterically so i rolled with it & asked what other funny names people call each other. her responses:

pop pop not scott. gramma calls pop pop scott. scott chloe & zoe's daddy. scott not pop pop. {insert hysterical laughter}
mommy not heidi! mommy s mommy!
millie is millie bean & amelia {no laughter, serious topic: how amelia can have 3 names but everyone else only one?}
asher is aunt kik's CAT! not a man on tv {this is from a tv show i'm watching from dvd's, the gilmore girls}

so then we had another conversation about how people are called different things for the roles they have, such as grandma & grandpa but they also have regular names. this knocked her socks off, folks. she was flabbergasted, quiet...then started laughing again & ended it with: mommy silly.

so i have another situation: to diaper bag or not to diaper bag.

we have a few diaper bags, most of which have screwed up zippers. i lugged around a huge red columbia diaper bag from the time amelia was born. recently i started carrying a tote bag with my purse innards (wallet; make up clutch with no make up in it & instead filled with pills, chap stick & liners; phone; empty checkbook fold) & then a ziplock bag filled with diapers & diaper accessories.
 but i don't like it, this tote bag that i have to dig around for a minute or two before pulling out what i need. so do i buy yet another diaper bag for this next phase of 1 kid in diapers full time, another in poop-only pull ups & then the desitin, wipes, & poopy diaper bags (we use biodegradable doggy poop bags--perfect size).

any ideas? help?!

well, if you really want to help there are these diaper bags...
i think this is a similar one in the paper & thread store at the mall. i have stopped stalking the bags b/c i thought this tote idea would work. hhmm...but if i wanted to buy a $90 bag, i think i would want it to be just a purse that i could use for years & years. argh. the mama-angst of it all.

let it be known that when i do carry around the big 'ole red columbia diaper bag--if you or your kid need a band aid, kleenex, epi pen, scissors, plastic placemat, kid fork/spoon/bib, sidewalk chalk, socks, outfit, snack...(the list goes on & on)...so yes, if you or your kid needed any of this stuff, i would totally be your lady. that bag carries everything. so can i go from lugging around the kitchen, bathroom, & closet to just carrying a single diaper & a handful of wipes? (wait, must bring desitin to fight off the ever-near diaper rash).

  1. I carry everything in a giant purse. 2 diapers, wipes, snacks for Em, snacks for me (3 kinds right now), my wallet, Kleenex, sun glasses for me, real glasses for me, inhaler for me, chapstick, random papers, Emily's sippy cup, a bib and so on...so far it works, but I am less certain with baby 2 coming.

  2. I've ditched my diaper bag for a big purse. I always keep a loaded diaper bag -- the one I am SICK of carrying -- in the car for emergencies/long trips.
